Archaeological Museum of Corfu
Crafting a contemporary museum experience
After fifty years of operation, the Archaeological Museum of Corfu sought contemporary ideas and tools to meet new museological challenges. Polyptychon’s museological team curated and reorganized a collection of 1,600 antiquities into ten new permanent sections, thematically structured to illuminate every aspect of public and private life in antiquity, spanning from prehistory to the Roman period. Beyond the reorganization of the permanent collection, we digitised and documented the collection, designed the digital interactive exhibits and curated the design and construction of the exhibition equipment.

At the heart of our approach lies the human dimension: both the creator behind the artifact and the visitor who engages with it. Drawing on principles of Interpretative Theory, we treated each object not as a static “thing” but as a work of human thought, requiring context and interpretation. The exhibition design followed a holistic logic: the whole is defined by its parts, and the parts are understood in relation to the whole. This flexible model of interpretation ensures that archaeological material remains central, while also allowing the exhibition to respond to the needs and expectations of today’s audiences.
