Accessibility Services for Museums

Culture without barriers

Experiencing art and cultural forms of expression is one of the most powerful tools we have for building empathy, supporting mental wellbeing, and deepening our capacity for attention. Research consistently show that engagement with such content reduces stress and anxiety, strengthens emotional resilience, and through practices like slow looking -the deliberate and unhurried contemplation of a single work- trains us to notice, to pause, and to be present in ways that carry far beyond the walls.

At Polyptychon, we design and produce accessibility solutions for cultural institutions, organisations, and digital platforms. Built on the principles of Universal Design, we target interventions toward a culture open and accessible to all, working to remove exclusions and address inequality and discrimination in access to cultural heritage. Our services include:

• Copywriting | inclusive, purpose-driven content for all audiences & media
• Audio guides | scripted & professionally recorded for visitors with visual impairments
• WCAG 2.1 web compliance | auditing & implementing web accessibility standards across digital platforms
• Braille print material | signage, brochures & catalogues in tactile format
• Sign language video production | institutional & exhibition content with integrated interpretation for deaf audiences
• Multimedia & educational applications for mental health | interactive tools developed in collaboration with psychologists & specialist educators

We have delivered accessibility studies and implementations for cultural institutions including the Tsoclis Museum, the Fassianos Museum, the Byzantine Museum of Kastoria, the MNNTA helping them open their doors wider, in every sense.

A series of historic documentaries and educational videos for the Municpality of Kalamaria, in which we embedded interpretation in Greek Sign Language by a certified interpreter, along with full subtitling, securing accessibility for deaf and hard-of-hearing visitors. Τhe project reflects a targeted intervention toward a culture open and accessible to all, pursuing the meaningful inclusion of people with sensory disabilities.

A comprehensive accessibility initiative centered on the accessibility for people with sensory disabilities at the Byzantine Museum of Kastoria. We produced audio tours for selected museum exhibits, upgraded the museum’s website in line with the current WCAG 2.1 standard to improve digital access for visitors with hearing and visual impairments and designed dedicated Braille signage throughout the exhibition space.
