Digital Heritage Guide of Kastoria
Network of cultural routes
When the Ephorate of Antiquities of Kastoria engaged us, the goal was not simply to digitize but to create something worthy of the city's heritage. That meant treating content quality as a non-negotiable foundation, and designing a product that could genuinely serve residents, attract visitors, and contribute to Kastoria as a cultural destination.
A complete digital heritage platform built on two commitments: uncompromising content quality, and a cultural product designed to elevate the visitor experience and support the cultural tourism of Kastoria. The work began with systematic photographic documentation of Kastoria's heritage assets: Byzantine churches, Ottoman landmarks, traditional mansions, and museums. Immersive 360° panoramas were developed in parallel, giving remote audiences a genuine sense of the place.
All content was curated and structured around four thematic routes, each tracing a distinct layer of the city's history and architectural identity. This content foundation feeds two interconnected platforms built on a shared CMS: an interactive table installed at the city's museum, presenting monuments on a live map, and a freely available mobile application that serves as a full city guide with Augmented Reality overlays for on-site exploration and an audio guide designed for visitors with visual impairments.
The result is a dynamic digital platform that grows with the city, equipping Kastoria's cultural heritage with the tools to serve its visitors and strengthen its place as a sustainable cultural destination. Physical monument signage, designed as the on-site gateway to the digital platform — each label combining interpretive text with a scan point that delivers richer content directly to the visitor's phone.
