Edward Lear - The journey of a Victorian artist in Giannitsa

February 19, 2014

The exhibition presents 14 copies of landscape paintings crafted from the Victorian artist Edward Lear, which he painted during his tour in Giannitsa area in 1848.

The material comes from Houghton library archive of Harvard University, and was kindly granted for the organisation of the exhibition. The texts which document the exhibition are excerpts from his travel book entitled: «Journals of a landscape painter in Albania».

The exhibition, presented in the Mausoleum of Gazi Evrenos, in the city of Giannitsa, a sacred place of pilgrimage for the muslims of the balkan peninsula, was the first event to be hosted in the monument after the successful restoration works executed by the 11th Ephorate of Byzantine Antiquities and part of a master plan to highlight the ottoman architecture in Giannitsa.
